One pitfall of being a baking recipe developer is I have almost no reason to get up, leave my house, and go buy pastries from a bakery. Even if it’s for something I almost never make (like sourdough bread or croissants) it’s hard for me to justify the trip and the spending because we have McDonald’s at home. Recently I’ve been trying to fight through that inhibition and make it a point to go to more bakeries I love — and ones that are on my to-try list. I recently “lead” a bakery tour for some friends of three new-ish bakeries (by which I mean I just dragged them along) and we loved it so much that we want to do a sequel with more new-to-us bakeries, which you can see a list of at the bottom of this article.

I have my little neighborhood beat (Bed-Stuy, Greenpoint, Williamsburg) although I am trying to break out of my usual haunts (NYC is a big place!) And this isn’t even an exhaustive list of bakeries I like! So here are a few places I’ve been loving — and if you love a bakery that you think I need to try, put it in the comments! Frankly, a few of these places don’t need any more press, so maybe my next post should be underrated bakeries….
